Community Participation and Development
To involve, educate and empower members to build their homesteads, their community, the environment and wildlife around them. The Conservancy also aims at providing access to basic health facilities, access to clean drinking water and improved quality of basic education.
Goal
To involve, educate and empower members to build their homesteads, their community and the environment and wildlife around them.
Outcomes
- To employ a Community Liaison Officer (CLO):employed since January 2015.
- To create a Movement of Community Ownership:through education and encouragement members feel that the Kamungi Conservancy is owned and managed by the community themselves through an elected Board, and all members have opportunity to voice their opinions.
- Active and involved community participation:community members are encouraged regularly to actively participate in Conservancy life.
- To reduce the Culture of Illegal Activities (poaching/charcoaling):illegal activity cannot be addressed alone by security teams, therefore the role of community awareness, involvement and ownership is vital to moving those in the community from conducting illegal activities.
Goal
To grow the membership and the land area covered by the Kamungi Community
Outcomes
- ID Cards issued annually
- Statistical data maintained quarterly
- Growth is carried out in a strategic manner following phases of development over time
Goal
To facilitate the follow up of Title Deeds to Conservancy members; whereby the original gazettement of this piece of land in 1974 was a National Reserve, followed a year later by a secondary gazettement to Ngiluni Settlement Scheme/Mbeetwani Settlement Scheme, a move by the government to repatriate the growing population of the time. Titles have not been issued although individual land has been surveyed and owners have a plot number registered at the District Lands Office in Kibwezi.
Outcomes
- Lobby and plan:the Kamungi Conservancy will seek a compromise or solution to the area by communicating and meeting with County Government, and negotiating a solution that meets all needs, where the Ngai Ndethya is de-gazetted, but protected, so that the local people can gain title to their land.
Goal
To provide access to basic health facilities that meet the needs of common health challenges facing the members of Kamungi Conservancy (snake bites; rabies).
Outcomes
- Improve Local Clinic:replace the asbestos roof of the Ngiluni Clinic with mbati that allows for safe water collection and storage, waste disposal (incinerator), sanitation facilities (autoclave), and more nurse and patient-friendly treatment rooms; solar panels in order to provide electricity to run basic equipment and increasing clinic hours; lobby government to ensure staff get paid; increase patient numbers in order to increase government funding; staff training.
Goal
To provide access to clean drinking water for Kamungi Conservancy members (NOT LIVESTOCK due to destruction that will result).
Outcomes
- Well maintained and managed borehole:one borehole supplying managed and accessible water supply to Ngiluni Village, with a fenced/walled protection and a managed distribution plan to members and non-members.
Goal
To create secure, productive, manageable cultivated land that provides food for the land owners within Kamungi Conservancy, and later on a market outside of the community.
Outcomes
- Training on Conservation Farming Methods:practical crop and livestock husbandry management.
- Fencing of small, intensive cultivation:protect small areas of land from large wildlife (elephants and buffaloes).
Goal
To improve the quality of basic education so that increased numbers of local children attend class and receive an improved education.
Outcomes
- School teacher support:support to committed teachers to be able to carry out their work in a positive and productive environment.
- Develop Infrastructure:to develop simple strategies that help Kamunyu and Ngiluni primary schools to improve infrastructure, water collection and storage.
- Bursary scheme:to identify and support selected community students to have access to a proven and successful bursary scheme that provides opportunity to higher education.

- Mobile Films and Field Education:wildlife films are shown in the community and members are invited to discussions and debates around wildlife.
- Integration of Wildlife Education into School Curriculum:to partner with the Elephant Movie and to introduce dynamic educational methods into the schools so as to raise awareness toward to environment and wildlife.
Goal
To prevent wildlife from clashing with the human population.
Outcomes
- Mitigate:prevention of incidences of crop damage and loss of life is of utmost importance. In 2015 there were 282 cases recorded averaging 23.5 incidents every month (majority elephant crop raiding). Through a variety of community interventions (bee hive fences; electric fences; mobile HWC vehicle and scouts; communication; community awareness) incidences are expected to decrease significantly.
- Educate:through community involvement and awareness the community members will be educated as to how to plant to avoid attracting elephants and other crop raiders; how to keep crop raiders and predators away; how school children and others should behave around wild animals.
- Compensate:develop a fund that is controlled by the Board and which serves the purpose of compensating damage caused by elephants, buffaloes, leopard, lion and small predators.
Goal
To provide simple skills training, employment (especially of women) and support of existing enterprises that can be learned and applied utilizing local materials and local capacity.
Outcomes
- Vocational training:establishment of relevant vocational training courses targeting youth, women and men (simple accounting, weaving, woodwork, building, local crafts and designs).
- Agricultural Husbandry Training:development of a system whereby livestock owners and farmers have access to training on practical, effective and simple methods of agriculture that increase knowledge and productivity (bees, chickens, livestock, crops).
